“What’s that heavenly smell?” Barbara sat down on the couch.

“Dinner. Beef misoyaki, miso soup, and rice.”

“Sounds delicious. I haven’t had much Japanese food before.”

The conversation was stilted and unnatural. Somehow, the ease they’d shared last night had disappeared. Jimmy was determined to find it again. He didn’t want to scare her off, but he also didn’t want to let her go.

“Let me get some wine. Stay right there.”

When he returned with two cups of sake, he doubted his decision to make this a true Japanese dinner, other than the utensils he provided for her. He should have gotten a nice Merlot, but done was done. He handed her the white cup and she peered into the warm liquid.

“Wine?”

“This is sake, traditional Japanese wine. Please, try it.”

Barbara looked at the cup dubiously, but mimicked his hold and tilted it to take a sip.

Her eyes told the story.

“This is delicious. What’s it made from?”

“Rice.”

She took another sip. “Did you make dinner?”

“I did with my own little hands.”

One blonde eyebrow went up. “All traditional Japanese dishes?”

Jimmy had contemplated calling for pizza or Mexican, anything to avoid admitting that he was nervous about serving Japanese food to the woman who haunted his dreams. In the end, he knew he wouldn’t do it. A woman had to accept him for who he was, including his heritage. He would do the same for her.

“Yes, they are.”
